A dozen times - I've surfed over to Wade's Wines - and been greeted by beautiful art - headlined - the prisoner has arrived - B.F.D. - Wade has to sell wine-
Shoppng for party gift at Crossroads - there it was on the shelf - perfect label for my friends party - George raved about the wine - so I bought a bottle for Jersey and some for myself -
Don't know if E and M opened theirs yet - but opened mine on Friday with Maki and Susan - "I GET IT !!!"
The Prisoner - emulates a "field blend" - old world - a winemaker would plant a variety of grapes in a single vineyard - Cab - Merlot - Zin - Malbec - whatever - harvest them all at once - ferment them all at once - fun stuff - refreshing - meant to be drunk early - balanced with complexity - this is NOT the high end blend of a Meritage -Syrah -
Orin Swift Cellars "The Prisoner" 2002 - pulled the black grapes from a variety of vineyards - 53% Zinfandel, 15% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Charbono and 7% Petite Sirah - with the result being something very different -
Our notes from friday night - sweet - slightly astringent - 15.2% alcohol - but doen't knock you down - fruity - definitely a sense of being a blend - rich rich flavors - but a lightness of being - smiles all around
A few words on cost -
A trapper came in from the Alaskan wild for provisions at The General Store - on the wall behind the counter was an axe handle that he needed priced at $20,00 - the trapper confronted the store owner - "Its only $10,00 in the Sears Catalogue" - to which the store owner replied - "Fair enough - give me $10,00" - they exchanged monies - whereupon the store owner took back the axe handle and put it back on the wall - "What are you doing" - asked the trapper - to which the store owner replied - "waiting for the boat to come in" -
Two Buck Chuck - sells for $1.99 at Trader Joe's on the west coast - $2.99 on the east coast - the difference - which the store's website readily admits to - is freight - hence - Three Buck Chuck -
Crossroads had "The Prisoner" at 36.99 - Wades Wines in Simi Valley posts $25 plus UPS and K&D in SF lists it at 23.99 plus UPS to select states - NY is not one of them - and they are out-of-stock -
The price difference was not all freight - but then - there was no "waiting ffor the boat to come in"
Enjoy -

I bought a case of the '02 prisoner without ever trying it. i heard so much hype on it, and drove out of state to get it. I drank one bottle, and am returning the other 11.

If K&D won't send your selection to NYC and will sent it to NJ, then let me know.

This wine is insanely popular out here in California among afficionados of small production wines. I'm not sure I understand why -- that astringency you mention ruined the wine for me. Love the label though.
