15 March 2006 - EXPATICA - WIESBADEN, GERMANY - Germany is producing more red wine and more wine winning the coveted quality rating "Qualitaetswein mit Praedikat", according to official figures released Wednesday.
Despite widely being seen as a white wine producer, some 41 per cent of total German production last year was red wine, said a report by the Federal Statistics Agency.
Red wine production was 3.8 million hectolitres in 2005, compared with 2.7 million hectolitres in 2003.
White wine production continues to fall and last year was 59 per cent of the German total, down from almost 67 per cent in 2003, the report said.
Total German wine production in 2005 was 9.2 million hectolitres.
The amount of wine which won the top quality rating last year was 2.9 million hectolitres, up from 2.6 million hectolitres in 2004 but still down from the 2003 bumper crop with 4.2 million hectolitres, the report said.
