Brunch at Axe - its all about the pancake (singular)
Minimalist decor - organic ingredients - driving down Abbot Kenny - there's no way to imagine the greatness that lies behind a storefront that barely says restaurant -
Almost everyone ordered poached eggs - served on a bed of stewed greens - plus - ultra thin slices of seasoned potatoes grilled as home fries - plus - double cut - double smoked bacon -
Think I was a couple of Chicken Apple Salads - potato - celery - croutons - greens - capes - herbs - lemon anchovy dressing -
For moi - soup & salad - lentil with sausage - in a massive bowl - rich flavored thin broth - a gazillion lentils - tiny bits of sausage meat - tomato relish - defined flavors - about as far away from the lentil of a Jewish deli as is humanly possible - just great - plus - Arugula salad - piled high - fresh and crisp - topped with shaved Parmesan cheese - balsamic olive oil dressing -
And then there's was the pancake (singular) - listed as - 9 Grain served with maple syrup - its (singular) $10 - taking up the entire 12" plate - its full - its moist - you taste various grains but can't quite make them out - you experience texture which is a concept foreign to anyone of us who have ever followed the recipe on the Bis-Quick box - the flavor is seductive -
One pancake at the top of the table - a second at the other end - seven forks on the table - Axe serves it with one pad of butter on top (very west coast) - a jigger of maple syrup on the side - it initially seemed too much - but every morsel vanished -
You have to navigate the streets of LA - the freeways' on/off ramps - a few back streets (residential) to get to Venice - but Axe is well worth the trip -
After brunch - spend time shopping - work out at Muscle Beach - or catch some rays - dinner is rumored to be simply awesome -
