Lenny started it on Columbus between 83 & 84 as a sandwich shop - it was a very (physically) narrow space - all sorts of combination sandwiches - you ordered by the number -
One night (so it seemed) - they moved next door - still narrow - but a fair sized room (in front of the kitchen) at the rear for sitting down and eating - though 90% (unscientific survey) of all food is "take out" - they were cash only -
Over the years the menu has expanded slightly - they have half a dozen "Lenny's" around the city - the kitchen is gone (everything comes from a central commissary) - they take credit cards - but the sense of local - neighborhood - sandwich shop remains -
The food is absolutely fresh - whether its sandwich - salad - hot plate (limited selection) - they do a booming business in coffee - deliveries are prompt - service in the store is always professional - there never seems to be any wasted motion -
My favorites -
BLT - tasted them all over the city - massive amount of bacon - not the "two slices" ration - tomato - shredded lettuce - mayo - choice of bread - we'll order several for the house -
Grilled Swiss w/ Bacon on Rye - this was the perfect grilled cheese - crisp - creamy melted cheese - plenty of bacon - distinct flavor - contrasting textures - one of those sandwiches what sometimes did not make it home - inhaled as one walked down the sidewalk -
Its places like Lenny's that give New York neighborhoods their character -
Enjoy -
