The New York TImes billed it as the "Best Burger in Westchester" - set on a strip of Route 22 - alongside 684 in Purdy/North Salem - whenever I drove by - the parking lot was packed - but in true suburban fashion - we were always eating at our friends' home -
Saturday that changed - snow was falling - half the house was lazy into a TV movie - we scooted out to "grab a burger" - at the Blazer Pub - a roadside tavern - if ever there was one -
Its dark inside - tables - large tri-oval bar - a few flat-screen TV's tuned to different stations - a juke box - a few video games - tables stuck in every corner - covered in red table cloths - look into the smallish kitchen - there's a sense of hustle and bustle -
- What'll you have - asked the sole Bartender -
- Tomato soup -
- Clam Chowder - New England Clam Chowder - he informed me -
- But what about the Fishers Island Annual Tomato Soup with Bacon Contest Winner 2005-2010 - I asked back -
- New England - you know - the white kind - Clam Chowder - he responded -
I wasn't going to get any Tomato Soup this night -
Ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger - medium well - wanted to order a "medium" order of fries but was warned off - told to order "small" - both by my friend who I was going to share them with - and the Bartender - who again reminded me that there was no Tomato Soup - when I asked - yet again -
Bacon Cheeseburger was good - cooked through - juicy - good sized - lots of cheddar - two pickles on top - weak roll - wondrous grilled onions - when I go back - it will be the Blazer Burger - the works on a hard roll - and of course - call ahead for the Tomato Soup
"Small" French Fries were a rather large portion - hand cut Idaho - perfectly well done - excellent -
Final grade - B+ - short of the caramelized wonder that is the Manhattan burger - but great tavern food - particularly factoring in $7.75 for the Bacon Cheeseburger vs $14.95 n the Big Apple -
Cash only -
