Dinner at 7:00 - men only - wild card football - drinks - steak - cigars - (tks Ed)
Drinks being prepped by Master Mixologist - Ray Maslanka - of Miss Ellie's (RIP) -
Martinis - Tom Collins - Elijah Craig - Woodford - Scotch - when was the last time anyone offered to mix a Manhattan at a private party - everything drink with extra flourish - several of the group indulging in Bloody Marys - in fact - there seemed to be a buzz - forcing me to step outside my beloved brown spirits - at least until the wine began to flow
Asked for a mini Bloody Mary - was given a lesson -
- Lime Juice -
- Worcestershire Sauce - French's not Lea & Perrin's - light -
- Horseradish Juice - twice strained - light -
- Celery Salt - heavy -
- Tomato Juice - Campbell not Sacramento -
- Pepper - fresh ground white not black -
- Lime Oil - see below
Ray made the mini - sans Lime Oil - asked me to taste - a good Bloody Mary -
He then took back my drink - twisting six wide strips of lime rhine over the glass - releasing the droplets of Lime Oil into the mix - shaken - pour back sans ice - tasted again - transformation - the good had moved to fantastic - edges polished - almost homogenization - while retaining a complexity of flavors - otherworldly - there was magic in the mixology - (tks Ray) -
very different - very subtle - very low spice - more a tomato drink - than a bloody mary
