The craving was a dozen raw Louisiana Oysters -
- Walking through the CBD - nothing -
- Headed to Acme - the line - "waiting to be seated" - over half a block - cut to the front - tried to snag two seats at the shucker's counter - suddenly confronted by a bouncer - who doubled as a NOPD officer - complete with leather jacker - badge - Glock - not prepared to stand on on-line - moved on -
Even more determined -
- Mister B's Bistro - no oysters -
- Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse - no oysters -
- Sought assistance from the Doorman at Hotel Monteleone - "Royal House Oyster Bar - 'bout three blocks down Royal" - success might be at hand -
Clean - bright - newish - not the dark funk of Acme - nor the soullessness of a freshly minted Bourbon Street trap - quickly found two seats at the marble topped bar - by chance - on the oyster shucking end -
Our young shucker was just starting a new tray - we order two drinks - and - "a dozen" -
Bit of small talk as he finished the tray - then he gave it right to us - whoa - how did that happen - then - who's to complain -
They're big - still cover in their natural liquor - ice cold - fresh - fresher - freshest -
Adding a dash of cocktail sauce - tried a spot of white horseradish - covered too much flavor - unless creating an "open sandwich" - saltine cracker/ splash of red cocktail sauce/ spot of horseradish/ hugh oyster meat - inhale - they don't do things like this at the Carnegie Deli -
Small talk with the shucker -
- how long has Royal House been open - "year and a half" -
- how many oysters do you do a night - "400 - 500 - sometimes more" -
- then he added - "night of the super-bowl - over 'thousand" -
Thumbs up for the Royal House Oyster Bar - and - tks to the Monteleone Doorman - giving guidance whether you were a hotel guest - or - just in search of "a dozen" to satisfy a craving - so very NOLA -
