Talk about non descript locaations - there's a single sandwichboard sign out in front of the white building - you have to make sure not to block anyone's drivewy when you park - but - there on the corner of Annunciation and Bellecastle sits Domilise - reputed to make the finest PoBoys in all of New Orleans -
We found it - walked in - took a plastic number tag off the wall hook - waited - grabbed an empty table - got an Abita - watched in fascination as the three people behind the counter - custom made PoBoys - one at a time -
The menu's on the wall -
- Sausage -
- Hamburger -
- Cheeseburger -
- Wiener -
- Roast Beef Roasr -
- Beef and Swiss -
- Roast Beef and Ham
- Shrimp -
- Catfish -
- Oyster -
- BBQ Beef (Wed & Sat Only)
then - when its you turn to order - its you turn to be served -
Who ever takes your order - makes your order - serves your order -
Waited about ten minutes - my #31 called - "I'd like ... Oyster PoBoy ... large ... dressed ... with a little gravy - "
Thick beef gravy - on crisp fresh deep fried to order (nothing pre made) Louisanna Oysters ??? - was I kidding myself - had just heard another patron - #26 - who loooked to be a regular - order "with gravy" - asked if I had heard correctly - he smiled broadly - I had to go for it - what a treat !!! -
The sandwich was H U G E - contrasting textures - intense flavors - lettuce - tomato - pickle - mayonaise - and that rich soothing gravy - against the freshest fried oysters that fought to remain crisp and seemed to win - all within the long crusted PoBoy roll - a feat of bakery magic in a city who's humidity causes women of all ages to scream "bring hair products" -
The first bite - OMG - declarations to immediately find excuses to return for Catfish PoBoys - Shrimp PoBoys - more ice cold Abita - knowing full well that when I came back - I would cave again for the Oyster Po Boy - with gravy -
